Emerging Mandala

I enjoy Mandala art. The idea of a two dimensional representation of meditation. When I set out to make my first Mandala, I realize I don’t feel very centered, so I placed the starting point off-center. When it was done, I enjoyed the piece, but the starting point seemed contrived to me. So I came up with a new design and drew it out on large sheets of paper. I put them on my archery target and on a very windy day at 60 feet away is a guarantee that I won’t hit the center that I am aiming for. Wherever the arrows landed on the designs are where the starting point of the Mandala begins. Back to mandala Art being a representation of meditation, as I think about creating them I realize I have many distractions. The tiles that are diagonal to the rest of the design are the distractions. They come together to make their own design or story, and that becomes the names of the pieces in this series.

This one is in raw high fired black clay with no glaze.

We emerge from the darkness to seek the light and one day we will emerge into the darkness to seek the light.
